多义词是语言哲学、语言学以及心理学广为探讨的话题。人们之所以对多义词感兴趣是由于它涉及许多领域，如多义词与同形异义词的区别，多义词与模糊含义之间的界限，翻译、词典学等语义学的实际运用领域，以及外语教学等。
语言学文献对于多义词词义的心理储存方式存在争议，主要围绕一个核心：是否只有一个中心词义被表征（中心词义表征观点）还是所有的词义被独立表征（独立词义表征观点）。通过分析以往多义词心理表征的实验研究我们发现，它们得出的相反结论（中心词义和独立词义表征）是由于实验设计中的漏洞所致，如使用了语言水平相同的本族语者，所用实验材料的某些缺陷，以及使用了传统的在线心理语言学实验方法。
本研究对于多义词研究具有重要的理论意义；对于词典编撰和EFL教学具有一定的指导意义。本研究提出的理论框架、所使用的研究方法以及得到的结果弥补了对EFL学习者多义词心理表征研究的不足，对于词典条目中的多义词义项编排以及同形异义词的处理提供了心理依据，对于EFL学习者习得多义词词义具有重要的启示。
